World Environment Day

June 5

Early Years Festival and Celebration Calendar

World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5th, is a global event organized by the United Nations (UN) to raise awareness and promote action for the protection of the environment.

In early years education, World Environment Day can be an opportunity to introduce young children to the importance of caring for the environment and fostering eco-friendly habits that will last a lifetime.

In early years settings like preschools, nurseries, primary schools, educators can organize various activities and lessons to help children understand the significance of World Environment Day. Here are some ideas for incorporating environmental education into early years learning:

Outdoor Exploration: Take children on nature walks to explore and observe their local environment. Encourage them to notice the plants, animals, and natural features around them.

Planting Activities: Help children plant seeds or small plants in the school garden or in pots, teaching them about the life cycle of plants and the importance of greenery in maintaining a healthy environment.

Recycling and Waste Reduction: Introduce the concept of recycling and waste reduction. Set up a recycling station in the classroom and encourage children to sort their waste accordingly.

Environmental Discussions: Encourage discussions about environmental issues, such as the importance of clean air and water, the impact of littering, and the role of trees in maintaining a healthy ecosystem. Use simple language and age-appropriate examples to help children understand these concepts.

Energy Conservation: Teach children about conserving energy by turning off lights when not in use and closing doors to keep heat or cold air inside the classroom.

By incorporating World Environment Day themes and activities into early years education, educators can help young children develop a sense of responsibility towards the environment and an appreciation for the natural world around them.

This early introduction to environmental awareness can lay the foundation for a lifelong commitment to protecting the planet.
