Biting Policy

Biting Policy for Early Years Settings – EYFS-Aligned Guidance for Managing Biting Behaviour in Nurseries, Preschools & Childminding Environments – A policy to be used in Early Years detailing the issue of biting and specific processes. This is editable for your school or setting.

Support a safe, responsive, and understanding environment with our comprehensive Biting Policy for Early Years Settings. Designed for nurseries, preschools, reception classes, and childminders, this policy helps early years practitioners address biting incidents calmly, consistently, and in line with the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Ofsted safeguarding expectations.

This essential policy supports staff in responding appropriately to biting, reassuring families, and safeguarding all children’s emotional wellbeing and physical safety.

Key Features of the Early Years Biting Policy:

  • EYFS-Compliant: Reflects the EYFS focus on safeguarding, behaviour management, and child development

  • Clear Procedures for responding to incidents of biting, including support for both the child who bites and the child who is bitten

  • Behaviour Management Approach: Promotes understanding of biting as a developmental phase, not a disciplinary issue

  • Parental Communication Guidance: Provides templates and best practice for informing families while maintaining confidentiality

  • Preventative Strategies: Includes triggers, patterns, and environmental factors to assess and minimise risk

  • Links to SEN and Emotional Development: Considers the role of communication needs, emotional regulation, and sensory needs

  • Editable and customisable policy in Word format for use in your own setting

  • Prevents recurrence through proactive strategies

  • Demonstrates strong safeguarding and behaviour management during inspections

What’s Included in This Policy?

Phonics Phase 1 planning

This is great we have printed it out and we use daily for the Nursery children for a short Phonics activity. It has saved me loads of time and is really well thought out and each activity is clearly explained so the staff know what to do. Each time they teach Phonics they are becoming more confident with presenting.
