Early Years Transition Policy (2025)

This is an editable document in word which you can use to create your own personal transition policy. This is essential for every Pre-school, Nursery and School to ensure the wellbeing and involvement levels remain high during periods of change.
Our Transition Policy outlines the principles and procedures in place to ensure that children move seamlessly from within the EYFS and into Year 1, maintaining a sense of security, consistency, and joy in learning. The policy emphasises the importance of developmental continuity, recognising that children develop at different rates and benefit from a curriculum that builds upon their prior learning.
Key elements of the policy include:
-
Collaborative planning between Reception and Year 1 staff to ensure curriculum alignment and continuity in learning approaches.
-
Gradual changes to routines and environments, enabling children to adjust at their own pace.
-
Ongoing assessment and observation to ensure that children’s individual learning needs continue to be met.
-
Parent and carer involvement in the transition process, with opportunities for information sharing and support.
-
A flexible Year 1 curriculum in the autumn term, incorporating elements of continuous provision and play-based learning where appropriate.
-
Focus on emotional wellbeing, ensuring children feel confident, safe, and understood during the transition.
This policy reflects statutory guidance and best practice recommendations, ensuring that every child is supported to thrive as they progress from the EYFS into KS1.
