Sun Safety Policy – A policy to be used in Early Years detailing why you need sun safety, how you implement it and specific processes. This is editable for your school or setting.

Under the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) framework and general health and safety duties, providers are required to protect children from foreseeable harm. Excessive sun exposure is a preventable health risk, and a clear policy ensures that all reasonable steps are taken to keep children safe.

A written policy ensures consistency across staff and settings, so every child receives the same level of protection. It sets out expectations for sunscreen use, appropriate clothing, shaded play, and hydration. It also explains how to handle the situation if a parent refuses their child to wear sun cream.

Outdoor play is essential for young children’s physical and emotional development. A sun safety policy allows children to benefit from outdoor experiences while minimising health risks, especially during peak UV times.
